Does it matter ?—losing your sight?…
There’s such splendid work for the blind;
And people will always be kind,
As you sit on the terrace remembering
And turning your face to the light.
– Siegfried Sassoon
We were commissioned by 14 |18 NOW to produce a series of provocative and innovative short films by artists for the centenary of the outbreak of World War One. With disability being one of the most shocking and unexpected outcomes of WW1 we wanted the series to explore this legacy from a historical point of view, as observed and experienced by contemporary disabled artists.
The 5 films (in the order shown here) are
Resemblance: Claire Cunningham
Ghosts: Simon Mckeown
Oh! What a Lovely Lovely Ward: Katherine Araniello
Breathe Nothing of Slaughter: Tony Heaton
Soldiering On: Jez Colborne
Produced by Artsadmin and Xenoki
for 14|18 NOW and Channel 4 Television
** Award winner Picture This, Disability Film Festival, Calgary Canada.
